Wolfwalkers

The final instalment in directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart’s ‘Irish folklore trilogy’ offers a deliriously charming, unrelentingly gorgeous tale of female friendship, the power of empathy, the nature of magic — and the magic of nature.

One of the most acclaimed animated films of recent years, nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2021 Academy Awards, Square Eyes is delighted to present this Wolfwalkers Aotearoa New Zealand big screen premiere. With visual references to pre-Celtic imagery and Studio Ghibli — Wolfwalkers is an instant classic for all ages. The latest film from Cartoon Saloon and the genius collaborative team behind the celebrated The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, is a stunning testament to their singular animation style and remarkable storytelling chops.

Set within the backdrop of Ireland’s colonisation, in a time of superstition and magic, Robyn, a young female apprentice hunter journeys from England with her father, tasked with wiping out the very last wolf pack. When Robyn discovers free-spirited Mebh, a wild girl whose tribe possesses the ability to turn into wolves by night, she uncovers a secret that draws her into their enchanted netherworld — and attracts the unwanted attention of the town’s authoritarian gatekeeper.

Wolfwalkers forges its own trail without stepping over the stories that came before it. Here is an animated film that finds new beauty in ancient traditions; a film that fights back against the temptation to surrender what little magic this world still has left…
